What gets critiqued

Six dimensions, scored 0–10

Every photo critique is broken down the same way — so feedback is consistent, comparable, and actionable.

  • Composition

Framing, rule of thirds, leading lines, balance, and how the viewer's eye moves through the frame.

  • Lighting & exposure

Direction, quality, and balance of light — plus exposure, dynamic range, and whether highlights and shadows are well handled.

  • Color & tone

Palette, color harmony, contrast, white balance, and whether tonal choices support the photo's mood.

  • Focus & sharpness

Where focus lands, depth of field, edge sharpness, and whether technical choices serve the subject.

  • Creativity & storytelling

Originality, intent, emotional impact, and whether the photo communicates a clear idea or narrative.

  • Technical quality

Noise, distortion, chromatic aberration, lens behavior, and overall execution of the capture.

EXIF, fully extracted

Every shot, decoded down to the last setting

Our metadata engine reads 30+ EXIF fields from JPEG, PNG, DNG, and RAW files — far beyond aperture and ISO. Every value is shown alongside your critique and used to make the feedback more contextual.

  • Full exposure stack: aperture, shutter, ISO, exposure bias, metering, flash, white balance, shooting mode
  • Gear & optics: camera body, lens model, focal length, 35mm equivalent, image stabilization
  • Capture context: scene mode, orientation, software, date taken
  • Geolocation: GPS coordinates and altitude

No EXIF in the file? Evalens detects that too — and tells you, so the critique can adapt.

Smart tags & filtering

Find any photo by what's actually in it

Each critique auto-generates semantic tags — genre, mood, style, setting, subject, dominant colors — and your library ships with the filters photographers actually need.

  • Auto-tagged with genre, emotion, style, setting, and palette — no manual work
  • Filter by status, score range (0–10), category, upload date, tags, and colors
  • Score-range filters let you pull every weak-focus photo in two clicks
  • Sort and search across your whole library, with grid and list views

Combine filters freely to slice your library exactly the way you want.

AI Coach

Turn a batch of your photos into one clear critique

Pick the photos you want reviewed — up to 10 at a time — and AI Coach merges their critiques into a single synthesized analysis. It averages the scores across all 6 dimensions, surfaces the recurring patterns, and tells you exactly what to shoot and edit next.

  • You choose the photos: select 3–10 analyzed shots per session, not your whole library
  • Averaged scores across 6 dimensions — composition, lighting, color, focus, creativity, technical, rolled into one overall average
  • One synthesized critique that distills the common strengths and weak spots instead of ten separate ones
  • Actionable shooting & editing tips: concrete techniques plus post-processing steps with slider starting points
  • Saved to your history: revisit any AI Coach session and its scores whenever you like

Free 1 session/day · Pro 5/day · Premium 10/day. Requires at least 3 analyzed photos.

How it works

From upload to critique in three steps

No presets, no sliders — just an honest, structured critique you can act on.

  1. Upload your photo

Drop in any JPEG, PNG, DNG, or RAW up to 10 MB. EXIF metadata — camera, lens, aperture, ISO — is read automatically so the critique can reference your real settings.

  2. Get a six-dimension critique

Composition, lighting & exposure, color & tone, focus, creativity, and technical quality are each scored 0–10 with a written breakdown — what works, what doesn't, and why.

  3. Improve & track

Save the critique to your Library, compare scores across AI models, and let AI Coach spot patterns across your work and tell you what to practice next.

FAQ

Photo critique FAQs

Everything you might want to know before uploading your first photo.

How does AI photo critique work?

Upload a photo and our AI evaluates six dimensions — composition, lighting & exposure, color & tone, focus & sharpness, creativity & storytelling, and technical quality. Each dimension gets a score from 0 to 10 and a written critique explaining what works, what doesn't, and how to improve. The whole photo critique takes a few seconds and requires no sign-up.

Which aspects of a photo are evaluated in the critique?

Every photo critique covers composition (framing, rule of thirds, leading lines), lighting & exposure (balance, direction, mood), color & tone (palette, harmony, contrast), focus & sharpness (depth of field, detail), creativity & storytelling (intent, originality), and technical quality (noise, distortion, dynamic range). Each aspect receives a 0–10 score with specific, actionable feedback.

What file formats are supported for photo critique?

Evalens supports JPEG, PNG, DNG, and RAW formats with a maximum file size of 10MB per image. EXIF metadata — camera, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length — is extracted automatically and used to make the critique more accurate and contextual.

Can I save my photo critiques and track progress over time?

Yes. Create a free account to save critiques to your Library, build a permanent collection, and watch your average scores improve as you apply the feedback. AI Coach reviews a batch of photos you select and recommends what to practice next.

What EXIF metadata does Evalens extract from my photos?

Evalens extracts 30+ EXIF fields from JPEG, PNG, DNG, and RAW files, including camera body, lens model, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length (and 35mm equivalent), exposure program, metering mode, exposure bias, flash, white balance, color space, shooting mode, scene mode, image stabilization, orientation, software, date taken, image dimensions, megapixels, and GPS coordinates with altitude. The extracted metadata is shown alongside every critique and used to make the feedback more contextual.

Can I search and filter my photo library?

Yes. Every critique auto-tags your photo with genre, mood, style, setting, subject, and dominant colors. Your library ships with the filters photographers actually need: sort order, status (analyzed, processing, failed), score range from 0 to 10, category, upload date, tags, and colors. Filters can be combined freely and toggled between grid and list views.

How many photo critiques can I get per day?

The Free plan includes 10 daily photo critiques, the Pro plan offers 50, and the Premium plan provides 100. Daily limits reset every 24 hours. Anonymous critiques without an account count toward an IP-based daily limit.

Is my photo data private and secure?

Yes. Photos are processed securely and never shared with third parties. Anonymous critique photos are automatically deleted after 10 minutes. Library photos are stored encrypted at rest and are only ever visible to you.

What is AI Coach for photography improvement?

AI Coach is an advanced feature that merges a batch of critiqued photos you select (3–10 per session) into one synthesized analysis, identifies recurring weak spots and patterns across the set, and gives you tailored recommendations on which photography skills to practice next. Think of it as a personal photography mentor for the photos you bring it.

Which AI models power the photo critique?

Evalens runs photo critiques across multiple frontier AI models — including the GLM, GPT, Qwen, Mistral, and Grok families — so you can compare perspectives and get a well-rounded critique instead of a single model's blind spots.
